Taxi travel is both cheap and convenient in Mainland China and Taiwan. So you’ll probably be spending a great deal of time in them. A taxi is a great place to practice your Chinese for two main reasons. Firstly, you need to let the taxi driver know where you want to go and quite possibly how to get there! This means that you must be able to speak some Chinese. Necessity is a great motivator. Secondly, taxi drivers tend to be curious about foreign visitors to China and so readily try to strike up a conversion with you.
